Interview feedback

In an interview conducted with Marwa Kasem, the mother of Adam Sayed, a child suffering from a disability. The interview was conducted to investigate the challenges faced by the mother over the child in terms of education, enrollment into a school, and so on. It could be seen that disabilities in children are often discovered during the first 12 months of birth when the child failed to undergo activities that his peers were doing effortlessly.

Another issue discovered during the interview was the late enrollment of the child in school. Adam began school at the age of 4 years old after a rigorous qualification test by the school. The boy was eventually admitted into Harry Moore school; a private special school for students with disabilities. The enrollment test conducted by the school also revealed some of the challenges facing special children as the board met several times to decide whether to accept Adam or not.

Aside from this, when Marwa (Adam’s mother) was asked about the challenges or difficulties she faced while applying to a school for her kid. The mother revealed that the only or major issue she was faced with, was finding a suitable school that will not only accept or admit Adam but the school that would help his condition in areas of walking and speech. The only wanted only a special needs school for Adam, and that was one of the reasons for the delay or stress she went through.

The mother further discloses the follow-up procedures for her son during the school day. Adam goes to school and attends classes like normal kids, but also attends special classes such as ST, OT, and PT every day.

The interview also revealed that the school regularly contacts the mother to give updates about the child's faring and progress in school. The school has a seesaw provided for all parents for all school updates. Aside from things, the school also has a rehabilitation program for Adam, where he gets physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy every day in school.

It could be observed from the interview that the school ensure they kept to their promise, as Adam received all programs that the school promised his mother. The school also set up a meeting once a month to give the parent update about the student's well-being and progress.

Based on the advantage of enrolling kids with a disability in a special school, the school provides a great deal of guidance on how to communicate with and assist the student (as in the case of Adam) at home. They also assist the mother in guiding the kid in his daily activities as well as assist Adam in communicating and listening more effectively.

When Adam’s mother was asked about her views concerning Adam’s teaching staff, she was impressed, as she stated that, the teaching staffs were all excellent as they did everything, they could do to help her son. The staff was always there when needed and there wasn’t anything that they were not doing that they should be. Finally, the conversation confirms the importance or role of enrolling kids with disability in a special school, as they have a significant impact on a child’s condition. The mother explained that Adam's condition only got better when he went to school. Adam could not walk at all, but since he started attending the school, he can walk on his own and he can communicate and express himself better. His knowledge has also expanded a lot ever since he started school. This implies that there are many advantages of taking a child to a special school.

  1. This is a powerful blog about your interview with a parent of a special needs child. You do a great job of describing the amazing environment and services provided to children and their families who attend the A. Harry Moore School in Jersey City, a partner school with NJCU. The progress you describe which Adam achieved with so much support from school and home is nothing short of miraculous!!
